about

This recording features two distinct sounds, not only from the two different band configurations, but also from the conception of my sound as a trumpet player. The trumpet sound in the quartet is more gritty and earthy, at times trying to replicate a saxophone. The songs were chosen to showcase some new originals I wrote as well as pay homage to one of my favorites, Woody Shaw. On the other hand, my sound in the organ trio is coming from a spirit within and often trying to replicate my inner voice. The songs chosen with that group were ones I listened to a lot during 2019 and 2020 and they helped give me inspiration. While the organ trio has a raw, personal quality reflecting a more introspective approach, the quartet is more focused on establishing style and nuance. Both sounds coming from my horn represent a new approach and are now interconnected – they were the focus of this project and the reason for the title, Sound Duality.

The bonus piano track on this recording is for my late wife Rachel, who died in 2018. Her presence was felt throughout each song on the recording and I used the Billy Harper song to find peace. The ending is my own arrangement.
